Shania was born Eileen Edwards in Timmons, Ontario. Her mother and father divorced when she was very
young. Her mother married Jerry Twain and she moved her daughters. Two sons came later. Shania always liked to sing and write
country music. During her teenage years, she performed with local bands. After high school, Shania went to Toronto to sing.
Unfortunately, tragedy struck. Both of her parents were killed in a car accident and she had to raise her sister and younger
brothers. She had to put her dreams aside.
Mary Bailey, a family friend, got Shania a job at a resort. Mary was also the one who got someone
to notice Shania's singing. As soon as her younger brothers graduated from high school, Shania moved to Nashville. the executives
at Mercury Records loved the way that she sounded, but something had to go. They thought that "Eileen Twain" would not
make it as a country singer so they made her change her name. She decided to keep her last name to honor the memory of her
stepfather and she changed her first name to Shania. Shania means "I'm On My Way".
